Construction crews have broken ground at Pape Station, one of 15 stops along the province’s new Ontario Line. Construction at Pape Station is now underway with work to build the foundations required for excavations that will ultimately connect the two subway lines.

“This groundbreaking demonstrates the incredible progress that our government is making towards delivering seamless rapid transit across the Greater Toronto Area,” said Kinga Surma, minister of infrastructure. “This transit-oriented community will bring more jobs, housing, including affordable units, retail and office space to the area, strengthening the character and liveliness of the broader Pape-Danforth neighbourhood.”

The station will connect with the TTC’s Bloor-Danforth line.

“The future Pape Station will serve as a key transit node, with more than 10,000 customers using the station during the busiest travel hour, making it faster and easier for commuters to travel across the city,” Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma told reporters at news conference.

Construction on the transit network began in late 2021 and is expected to be complete by 2031 with an estimated price tag of $19 billion. The estimated cost when the project was announced in 2019 was $10.9 billion with its completion expected in 2027.

A recent Metrolinx rapid transit project report shows the Ontario Line will cost $27.2 billion to build and operate, a 43 per cent increase from two years ago, including construction contracts to design and build southern stations and tunnels for $6 billion and northern tunnels for $4 billion.
