OSHAWA – Ontario Tech University in Oshawa has broken ground on a new on-campus residence as it moves to expand housing capacity and support growth.

The residence, known as The Ridge, will be built north of the Campus Ice Centre along a natural watercourse and is expected to welcome students beginning in Fall 2027.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the signing for this project with Ontario Tech University, a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation,” said Josh Morton, vice-president and chief operating officer, campus suites.

. This project is an incredible opportunity to meet the growing demand for student housing while creating a community-focused environment that supports academic success and student well-being, further enhancing Ontario Tech’s offerings by proving best-in-class housing and amenities. We are a multi-generational business, which aligns with the long-term approach required by this relationship.”

Construction will be completed in phases, with 450 beds opening in the first phase. Long-term plans call for the development to house about 2,000 students, supporting the university’s enrolment target of 20,000 learners.

The project is intended to provide additional student housing while keeping residents close to classrooms and laboratories. It also comes amid continued pressure on student housing availability in Durham Region.

Ontario Tech is leasing university-owned land for the development. The project is being built by a consortium led by Campus Suites and Woodbourne, with Campus Living Centres set to manage the residence once it opens.

“This new residence is a clear example of how we are building for the future,” said Brad MacIsaac, Ontario Tech’s vice-president of administration. He said the project will help ensure students have access to housing while contributing to broader housing solutions.

The residence is part of Ontario Tech’s long-term campus expansion plans as student numbers continue to increase.
