The Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) applauded the Government of Ontario for introducing a new land use protection clause that fosters industrial growth across the province.

The revised Provincial Planning Statement released last week now includes a clause requiring that any new development within 300 metres of employment areas must either avoid impacting these zones or, if unavoidable, mitigate any potential negative effects on their long-term success.

“This new clause reflects the ongoing advocacy of CME on behalf of our members. We have long championed an industrial land policy that protects strategic employment areas essential to the province’s economy,” said Dennis Darby, president & CEO of CME. “This update is a crucial advancement in maintaining Ontario’s status as a leading destination for manufacturing investment.”

With Ontario’s goal of building 1.5 million homes by 2031, CME underscores the need to balance housing development with the preservation of employment lands.

“The updated Provincial Planning Statement effectively balances residential growth with the need for manufacturing space, ensuring that manufacturers can expand and succeed,” Darby said.

As the province develops and implements new policies and guidelines under the updated Provincial Policy Statement, CME remains dedicated to working with the Ontario government and industry partners to further enhance the growth and competitiveness of Ontario’s manufacturing sector.
