PCL Constructors Canada Inc. has been recognized as a Safe Employer under the Supporting Ontario’s Safe Employers program.
The voluntary program, run by the province’s Chief Prevention Officer, honours Ontario employers that implement accredited occupational health and safety management systems and promote excellence in workplace safety.
“We are proud to be recognized among Ontario’s safe employers, which symbolizes our commitment to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for all,” said Geoff Howe, senior vice-president and district manager for PCL Toronto.
PCL first achieved national Certificate of Recognition 2020 accreditation for its occupational health and safety management system in 2022 and became the second general contractor in Ontario to receive recognition under the program as of September 2024.
An internal safety program includes district-specific manuals, formal operating procedures, project-specific health, safety and environmental plans, and a web-based safety management system.
PCL also uses hard hats with integrated chin straps, running falling object prevention campaigns, reinforcing glove use, and partnering with medical groups to provide support for non-emergent workplace injuries.
“This achievement isn’t just about compliance — it’s about care, commitment, and a passion for protecting workers,” said Dr. Joel Moody, Ontario’s chief prevention officer.
In 2024, PCL reported zero lost-time incidents across the organization and with trade partners, covering nearly 47 million hours worked, the company said. It was the first time in PCL’s 119-year history that it achieved this milestone.
