Special to Ontario Construction News
Pomerleau Inc. has been awarded the construction contract for the first phase of redevelopment of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston in the Town of New Tecumseth in south central Ontario.
The Montreal-based company, which specializes in building, infrastructure, and civil engineering, will construct a new, three-storey building that will more than double the size of the hospital to approximately 147,100 sq. ft. and increase in-patient bed capacity by 20 per cent. The full redevelopment is slated for completion by late 2028.

Three companies were shortlisted and invited to respond to an RFP in April 2025.  These companies are:
- EllisDon Corporation
- Ledcor Construction Limited
- Pomerleau Inc.
Once phase one is completed the hospital will be able to accommodate nine new in-patient beds, increasing the total number of beds from to 47 from 38. The hospital will also include a new emergency department that is triple the size of the current department, along with expanded diagnostic and surgical services and a new birthing suite.
The Ontario government, in announcing its awarding of the contract, said its $174 million investment is part of nearly $60 billion in government spending allocated for 50 hospital projects across the province over the next 10 years.
The design of the new facility will make significant use of natural light and modern features. In addition to clinical upgrades, the grounds will be refreshed with new gardens, green spaces, and enhanced parking to provide a welcoming environment for patients and visitors. A new, elevated helipad will be added to improve critical care transport.
The wrap-around expansion to the current facility will significantly increase space and functionality. A number of critical clinical areas will be expanded and enhanced as part of the redevelopment, including:
- The Emergency Department will triple in size and include a separate entrance, as well as enclosed Ambulance Bays.
- Expanded laboratory space to meet the needs of a growing patient population.
- Increased inpatient bed capacity (20% more beds) and 100% single occupancy rooms.
- Expanded diagnostic imaging space, including the addition of an MRI suite for advanced imaging.
- Two new, state-of-the-art operating rooms to provide timely surgical services and an Endoscopy suite that is OR-compatible.
- Third floor of new facility is dedicated to the birthing unit.
- Enhanced space for reprocessing of medical devices for safe and efficient patient care.
An early works project is underway to prepare the site for new construction, ensuring that the project proceeds smoothly and efficiently.
