NEWMARKET – The Queen Street between Main Street and Prospect Street reopened Dec. 4 following a major rehabilitation of the Queen Street bridge, one of Newmarket’s largest bridge projects in over three decades.
The Town of Newmarket worked closely with contractor Alliance Verdi and Metrolinx to complete the project, which supports future GO Transit expansion and improves long-term infrastructure resilience.
“The Queen Street bridge project involved collaboration with many skilled trades, multiple partners, and extensive public communication,” Mayor John Taylor said in a statement. “Completing this project on schedule and under budget is a milestone for the town, and it will serve the community for decades to come.”

Construction included strengthening the bridge superstructure for long-term durability, widening sidewalks and improving lighting, reducing future maintenance requirements and supporting GO Transit’s planned expansion and track electrification.
The project followed a phased approach:
- Phase 1 (2023–2024): Bell Canada completed directional drilling for telecommunication conduits and reconfigured cabling.
- Phase 2 (March–December 2025): Town of Newmarket upgraded the bridge infrastructure, completing structural, roadway, and pedestrian improvements.

The bridge replacement was initiated after structural inspections determined the superstructure needed replacement to ensure public safety and long-term reliability.
