Swedish engineering firm Sandvik is investing more than $85 million to establish a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Greater Sudbury.

The new facility is expected to sustain 400 existing jobs and create more than 60 new positions, supporting the region’s advanced manufacturing and mining supply sectors. Ontario is contributing up to $4 million through the Invest Ontario Fund.

The facility will serve as a regional hub for equipment rebuilds, component repairs, field operations and servicing for battery-electric vehicles, the province said. The investment is intended to reinforce Northern Ontario’s role in critical mineral processing and support the growing demand for high-performance infrastructure in strategic industries.

“Sandvik’s investment is a testament to the reliability and resilience of Ontario’s world-class workforce,” said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “It is also an example of how investments in critical infrastructure will strengthen domestic supply chains and position the province at the forefront of industry transformation.”

Peter Corcoran, Sandvik Mining’s vice-president of sales for Canada, said the facility will provide a “modern, collaborative and future-ready work environment” to support customers and align with Canada’s priorities around electrification and sustainability.

Sandvik, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, is a global equipment and engineering company. Ontario’s manufacturing sector employs more than 800,000 people, while the province’s mining supply and services industry includes over 1,400 companies and 40,000 workers, contributing roughly $14.4 billion annually to GDP.

Mayor Paul Lefebvre said the investment underscores Greater Sudbury’s expertise in mining innovation and advanced manufacturing.
