Construction at Sunset Beach started last week, as the City of St. Catharines launches a major renovation project to modernize the popular waterfront park.
Work is expected to continue until next summer’s beach season.
The $6.9-million project is guided by the 2019 Community Vision Study, which was developed with extensive input from residents. The project is also supported by a $4.4-million provincial grant through Ontario’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). The upgrades aim to improve accessibility, protect and enhance natural features, and ensure Sunset Beach remains a vibrant destination for visitors and the community.
Key improvements include:
- Accessibility and active transportation features
- Parking lot and access road upgrades
- Trail improvements and additional shade structures
- Replacement of the playground
- Low-impact stormwater facilities
- Shoreline protection measures
- Reconstruction of the boat ramp
Renovations will also address challenges such as fluctuating water levels, extreme weather events, and increased recreational demand, while maintaining the park’s unique character and natural assets.
“Sunset Beach is a beloved community destination, and this project will ensure it continues to serve residents and visitors for years to come,” said a city spokesperson.
The project represents a major investment in St. Catharines’ waterfront, combining modern upgrades with careful preservation of the park’s natural and cultural features.
