The Ontario government has awarded a contract for the replacement of two highway overpasses in Oshawa to Dufferin Construction Company.
The work to replace the Park Road and Cubert Street overpasses in Oshawa is the first of a series of steps that the province plans to take to widen Highway 401 to 10 lanes.
Dufferin’s contract also includes resurfacing the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 from east of Harmony Road to Courtice Road.
The project will support hundreds of jobs during construction in the engineering, construction and supply chain industries.
“Today marks a major milestone for Oshawa,” said Mayor Dan Carter. “The replacement of the Park Road and Cubert Street overpasses is more than just infrastructure—it’s a strategic investment in our city’s future.”
More than 10,000 trucks use Highway 401 each day, transporting $380 million worth of goods.
“Our government is investing billions of dollars in highway infrastructure that will support our growing population, and keep vehicles moving,” said Ric Bresee, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation. “Replacing Highway 401 overpasses in Oshawa is a critical step in our plan to widen the 401 so we can tackle gridlock, grow our economy in the face of unprecedented tariffs, and support the drivers and businesses who rely on this highway every day.”
Construction is currently underway and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2028, part of broader plans to replace multiple overpasses in Oshawa including those at Albert Street, Simcoe Street and Wilson Road.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has retained AECOM to undertake a detail design and class environmental assessment study for the following two contracts located within the City of Oshawa in Durham Region:
- Contract A (Highway 401 / Wilson Road Overpass) involves the replacement of Highway 401 / Wilson Road overpass including the lowering of Wilson Road and improvements to the associated embankments, retaining walls, noise barriers, drainage, illumination, and signage to facilitate the replacement.
- Contract B (Highway 401 Bloor Street / Harmony Road Interchange) includes reconstruction of the Highway 401 Bloor Street / Harmony Road interchange, including the replacement of the Bloor Street Underpass and the Highway 401 / Farewell Creek Bridge, a new structure over Highway 401 to accommodate the reconfigured Highway 401 eastbound off and on-ramps, as well as improvements to retaining walls, noise barriers, drainage, illumination, traffic signals and signage to accommodate the reconfiguration of the interchange.
Although several overpasses are under construction, a timeline for the actual widening of the highway itself has not yet been provided.
