Vaughan recognized for new online construction mapping tool

The City of Vaughan has been recognized by BeSpatial Ontario for developing a new digital tool that helps staff manage infrastructure projects more efficiently.

The award highlights Vaughan’s use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to support internal coordination and project tracking. The main tool is an interactive construction map that gives staff a real-time overview of nearly 400 infrastructure projects across the city. It shows key details such as project scope, location, status and timelines in one place, helping teams avoid scheduling conflicts and improve how projects are planned and delivered.

The platform brings together project data into a single, instantaneous map – providing staff one platform to easily access information about project scope, location, status and timelines. This helps reduce scheduling conflicts, minimize delays and improve how projects are co-ordinated across teams.

canada america bridge 2Vaughan is the first city in York Region to adopt this kind of real-time GIS system under the region’s “All Construction” program.

In addition to the staff tool, the city has launched a public version called the Planned Capital Construction Map. This version lets residents check on current and upcoming construction projects in Vaughan. Users can look up projects by address, type, year or ward. The site is mobile-friendly, so updates are easy to access on phones and tablets.

“This map is an example of how we are leveraging technology to improve how infrastructure projects are coordinated and delivered,” said Vince Musacchio, deputy city manager, infrastructure development.  “By centralizing project data, we’re reducing delays, improving efficiency and supporting better decision-making across departments. I want to thank the Infrastructure Development team for their leadership and dedication to modernizing how we serve Vaughan.”
