The City of Welland is considering the development of a new multi-use recreation facility to replace aging arenas and better serve its growing and diverse population.
The proposed facility, to be located at 482 River Road, would offer year-round access to sports, fitness, wellness, and community programming under one roof. Early plans envision four ice pads, a gymnasium, walking track, fitness area, and spaces for events, wellness services, and local business opportunities.
“Recreation plays a powerful role in community health, inclusion, and connection,” said Jessica Ruddell, director of community services. “This new facility is more than just a building — it reflects the values and aspirations of our residents and our commitment to ensuring everyone has access to spaces that support their physical and mental well-being.”
The initiative forms part of a broader vision to create a regional sports and recreation campus integrated with the existing Youngs Sportsplex and surrounding amenities.
City staff say the new hub would be designed with future growth in mind, aiming to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs compared to the current aging infrastructure.
A public engagement session is scheduled for June 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the LIV Communities Arena. Residents are invited to review conceptual designs, explore proposed features, and provide feedback.
The project supports Welland council’s strategic priority of health and well-being by fostering a connected, active, and inclusive community.
