The City of Windsor has completed a $3.7-million expansion of its West End Transit Terminal, increasing the facility’s capacity and adding new amenities for passengers and transit operators.
Located on the Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare campus, the terminal now has nine bus bays, up from six.
The project was funded by the City of Windsor, the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario. The federal government contributed $1.4 million and Ontario provided $1.2 million through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s Public Transit Infrastructure Stream.
“Investing in public transit infrastructure is essential for the growth and well-being of our communities. The expansion of the West End Terminal will provide residents with a more reliable, accessible, and comfortable way to travel throughout the city and get to their daily essentials, including school, work, and home,” said Gregor Robertson, federal minister of housing and infrastructure.
Additional bus bays are expected to improve operational flexibility and support more efficient transit operations.
“The expansion of the Transit Windsor West End Terminal is another example of how we are investing responsibly in infrastructure that delivers real benefits for residents, transit users, and our community,” Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said.
The project included an extended bus platform, new passenger shelters, benches, bicycle parking and a dedicated facility for bus operators.
The new operator facilities provide modern, accessible and purpose-built spaces for frontline transit employees.
Sterling Ridge General Contracting Inc. was the general contractor for the expansion.
The terminal was designed to accommodate various bus sizes, providing flexibility as Transit Windsor modernizes its fleet and expands services.
Since 2024, approximately $40 million has been invested in the modernization of Transit Windsor operations, including garage upgrades, maintenance facility improvements, automated fare collection technology, vehicle location systems and customer service enhancements.
