Construction of a modern $7.5-million greenhouse complex is underway at Windsor’s Jackson Park, including an administration building, greenhouses and storage building.

The 2021 City of Windsor’s budget committed $1.6-billion towards municipal capital projects, with over $170-million being spent this year. This historic investment in roads, sewer, water, wastewater, parks and transit will help build our community up, deliver quality public services and drive economic growth.

“The new greenhouse complex will provide a valuable service for the City of Windsor and support the annual gardens across all City parks and public spaces,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. “But this new complex will also act as an education centre amenity for students and gardening clubs.”

The new complex will replace the nearly 100-year-old greenhouse structures at Lanspeary Park to serve as the home for the city’s horticulture department, doubling the size of Windsor’s existing greenhouse footprint to 22,000 square feet of open-concept production space.

It will feature the latest technology in greenhouse design including computerized controls, automated venting systems, irrigation and rooftop shading to improve energy and operational efficiencies.

In addition to the greenhouse production building, the new Jackson Park complex will feature a 3,500-square-foot multi-purpose heated greenhouse that will be open to the public for organized community and educational events, a 3,825-square-foot storage building and a 3,200-square-foot administration building. The full complex is expected to open in September 2022.

The relocation of the greenhouse complex to Jackson Park will also free up three acres that will be reclaimed as green space to expand Lanspeary Park.
