The Town of Port Hope has marked the start of construction for the Wellings of Port Hope, a new 55-plus community that will include five affordable housing units secured through negotiations with the developer.

The affordable units, designated for a 25-year term, are a milestone first announced in 2023 and formally approved by council in September.

“This agreement reflects our ongoing commitment to promoting inclusivity and housing affordability, ensuring that more residents can enjoy and benefit from this vibrant new community,” Hankivsky said.

Director of Development Services Desta McAdam said the agreement formalizes the five affordable units championed by the mayor.

“The very fact that this agreement is being presented this evening represents the mayor and council’s commitment to advocating for more affordable housing options in our community, and we are happy to bring it forward today for endorsement,” McAdam said.

Councillor Claire Holloway Wadhwani praised those involved in securing the deal. “I think this is a really good outcome,” she said.

The Wellings of Port Hope, to be built at 60 Henderson St., will include a four-storey building with 76 independent living units for seniors and 36 townhouse dwellings.
