Aecon Group Inc. says the Mosaic Transit Group has reached substantial completion on the Finch West Light Rail Transit line, a major milestone for the project in northwest Toronto.

Operational control of the 10.3-kilometre, 18-stop line has now been handed over to Metrolinx, which is preparing to open the route to passengers later this week.

“We are incredibly proud to have delivered this transformative project – improving mobility, providing a sustainable transit system, and creating a vital connection to Toronto’s subway system and local transit hubs to meet the needs of growing populations,” Aecon president and CEO Jean-Louis Servranckx said in a statement.

Aecon holds a 33.3 per cent interest in the project’s equity and construction components, along with a 50 per cent stake in the 30-year maintenance agreement. The company worked with consortium partners ACS Infrastructure Canada Inc. and CRH Canada Group Inc. under the Mosaic Transit Group banner.

Running between Humber College Station in the west and Finch West Station in the east, the LRT will link with Toronto’s broader transit network, including local services in Peel and York regions and GO Transit’s regional system.

The project also includes a new maintenance and storage facility built to support 18 light-rail vehicles. The facility achieved LEED Silver certification for its environmental design.

“Our teams demonstrated relentless determination, navigated complexity, and persevered throughout the project lifecycle and I would like to thank everyone that contributed to achieving this milestone for their commitment and tenacity,” Aecon’s Manuel Rivaya, senior vice-president, Urban Transportation Solutions, said in a statement. “We are pleased to play an integral role in connecting communities for generations to come.”
