Timmins and District Hospital is preparing to renovate and expand its emergency department, adding more than 27,000 square feet and increasing its size up to four times its current capacity. The project aims to provide more convenient, high-quality emergency care for patients and families in Northeastern Ontario.

Currently, the hospital sees more than 43,000 emergency visits each year, with demand expected to grow. The upgraded facilities will include 29 patient treatment areas, dedicated space for emergency mental health care, improved infection-control measures, and modern patient amenities to better serve Northern communities.

“Today’s investment in our emergency department is transformational for people across our district and marks an important step in the revitalization of our hospital,” said Kate Fyfe, president and CEO of Timmins and District Hospital. “The expansion will include a new state-of-the-art mental health emergency services unit, two new trauma rooms, increased ambulance bays and additional patient rooms, giving staff more space to treat patients requiring urgent lifesaving care, and cultural-based support.”

The hospital and the Ontario Ministry of Health are currently completing detailed planning for the project, including determining final square footage. Once planning is finalized, the project will be tendered, and a contractor will be selected before a construction schedule is confirmed.

“This expansion is great news for people in Timmins and surrounding communities,” said George Pirie, MPP for Timmins. “By modernizing this facility, patients and families can access the emergency care they deserve when they need it.”

Timmins and District Hospital serves about 110,000 people across the city and surrounding districts, including Cochrane, Temiskaming, Sudbury, Algoma, and the James and Hudson Bay coasts. The expansion is part of a broader effort to modernize hospitals across the province and ensure patients have timely access to high-quality care.
