Four bridges and elevated roads near Eastern Avenue and Adelaide Street East are set for major rehabilitation, including the southbound Don Valley Parkway (DVP) off-ramp to Richmond Street, which will be closed starting Wednesday, Oct. 15, until spring 2026.
The project covers the Eastern Avenue Bridge, Richmond Street East Bridge, Adelaide Street Bridge, and the DVP off-ramp, with construction staged to maintain safety and reduce traffic disruptions. The work, which began in July 2024, is expected to be complete by early 2027.
To accelerate progress ahead of the FIFA World Cup 26â„¢, crews are working extended hours, including winter construction, additional crews, and up to 24-hour shifts. Traffic staging and sequencing have been adjusted to allow more work to proceed concurrently while minimizing impacts on motorists.
The rehabilitation work is part of the City’s critical state-of-good-repair program to bring aging infrastructure up to current standards and ensure safe, long-term use for vehicles and pedestrians. The DVP off-ramp is funded by the Ontario government under the Ontario-Toronto New Deal, while the City is funding the other three bridges through its 2024 Capital Works Program.
Construction updates, staging plans, and traffic information are available on the City’s Rehabilitation of Eastern/Adelaide Bridges webpage.
The City of Toronto is rehabilitating the following four bridges:
- Eastern Avenue Bridge (ID264)
- Don Valley Parkway Off Ramp over Don River (ID263)
- Richmond Street East Bridge over King Street East (ID246)
- Adelaide Street Bridge over King Street East (ID266)
The scope of work for this project includes deck top rehabilitation of ID264 and ID263 and underside rehabilitation of all four bridges.
Deck top rehabilitation includes:
- Replacement of existing asphalt pavement and waterproofing
- Deck top concrete repairs
- Expansion joint replacement
- Reconstruction of deck overhangs and parapet (barrier) walls
Underside rehabilitation includes:
- Steel girder end strengthening and recoating
- Repair of fatigue-prone steel components
- Replacement of deficient bearings
- Concrete patch repairs of substructure and deck soffit elements
The work also includes construction of a multi-use trail on the Eastern Avenue Bridge (ID264). This work will ensure that the bridges meet today’s standards and remain safe for vehicles and pedestrians into the future. The project is part of the Council-approved 2024 Capital Works Program.
