York Region is taking a significant step to address the local housing crisis with a new affordable housing and community space development in the Town of Georgina.

The Region has purchased property at 187–195 The Queensway South to develop 86 affordable housing units, including community, transitional and emergency housing options, along with approximately 8,000 square feet of community space.

“Increasing the supply of affordable housing is a top priority for York Regional Council,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Eric Jolliffe. “The Queensway South development brings together expanded housing options and a welcoming community space where people feel supported and connected. It’s an exciting step forward, and when local communities and all levels of government work together, we can create a future where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.”

Housing affordability continues to be a growing challenge across York Region. In 2024, the Region’s subsidized housing wait list reached 18,419 households, with 4,500 new applications added that year alone. The current supply of 7,079 community housing units has not kept pace with demand.

“York Region is actively exploring strategies to accelerate the delivery of affordable housing in our communities,” said Town of Newmarket Mayor John Taylor, chair of the Region’s Housing and Homelessness Committee. “This initiative is part of a broader investment that promotes housing stability, and we look forward to working with the Town of Georgina on advancing our shared objective to expand affordable housing options to residents.”

Town of Georgina Mayor Margaret Quirk said the project aligns with local priorities and will provide important supports beyond housing.

“Everyone deserves access to safe and affordable housing,” Quirk said. “We appreciate the Region’s commitment to investing in a comprehensive solution in the Town of Georgina, including approximately 8,000 square feet of new community space for local organizations to continue supporting our residents. Together, we are building stronger communities where everyone can thrive.”

York Region will host a public information session to share details about the project and gather community feedback on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Georgina Ice Palace Hall, 90 Wexford Dr.
